What is Forest School?

Forest School originated in Sweden in the 1950’s and was introduced in Britain in the late 1990’s. It is an inspirational process that offers regular opportunities to appreciate and enjoy the outdoors. Learning occurs in a relaxed environment using all of the senses. Choices can be made and risks understood and taken. Forest School happens all year round and so children should wear warm, waterproof clothing.  The ethos of Forest School is that learners should be allowed time and space to explore, develop skills and interests and understanding through practical, hands on experience. Forest School promotes good health and fitness and an awareness of good hygiene. It helps children’s social and communication development as they work together problem solving, developing motor-skills and coordination in a fun and relaxed environment. Children also learn a sense of personal responsibility and respect for their environment as well as developing their confidence, self-esteem and independence.

The children then learnt that when we leave the field we are to leave it as we found it. Therefore, we formed a long line across the field and walked to the other end picking up any litter on the way.

In forest adventures, we went to the school field. It was a very windy day so we sang movement songs to keep our bodies warm. The children also spent time making pictures using leaves, grass and twigs and the children enjoyed climbing trees.

Forest Adventures 25/01/13

This week at forest adventures, we stayed in the school grounds as the conditions were very icy. We followed a trail of breadcrumbs to see if we could find the bear from the bear hunt story. We found that it was Mrs King hiding! The children then made trails for each other. The children also enjoyed leaving bread for the birds to eat and they really enjoyed playing with the snow!

Forest Adventures 18/01/13

This week, in forest adventures, Elm group enjoyed exploring the ice in the school field! Some children looked for the biggest piece of ice, whilst others were looking at the different ice shapes. We spent time recapping on the forest adventures rules and we practised coming back to the whistle. We also played a game called Woolly worms. The children had to work in teams to find as many pieces of brown or green wool as they could. Afterwards, we discussed how difficult it was to find as they ...
