Music

Intent

At Purley Primary School, we aim to foster a lifelong love of music by providing all pupils with engaging and inclusive musical experiences. Using the Sing Up curriculum, we ensure a broad and balanced approach that develops pupils’ musical skills, creativity, confidence, and appreciation of music from a wide range of cultures and traditions. Through singing, performing, listening, and composing, pupils build an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music and learn to express themselves musically. We want every child to see themselves as a musician and to experience the joy that music brings to school life.

Implementation

Music is taught following the Sing Up scheme of work, which provides a progressive and well-structured sequence of learning from EYFS to Year 6. Lessons include singing, performing, listening, appraising, and simple composition activities that encourage musical exploration and creativity.

  • Mixed-age planning is adapted to ensure progression and inclusivity across year groups.
  • Pupils are encouraged to perform regularly in assemblies, productions, and community events, such as our KS2 choir performing at the Harvest Festival.
  • Staff use the high-quality audio, video, and teaching materials from Sing Up to support subject knowledge and ensure consistency.
  • Opportunities for musical enrichment are provided through choir, instrumental lessons, theatre trips and vising musicians.

Impact

Through our music curriculum, pupils develop confidence, teamwork, and performance skills, as well as a deep appreciation of music in all its forms. They can use and apply key musical vocabulary confidently, demonstrate an understanding of rhythm, pitch, and structure, and express their ideas creatively. Performances and class work showcase growing musicality and enthusiasm. By the end of KS2, children are well prepared for continued musical learning at secondary school and have developed a positive, lasting relationship with music.
